For me, the Trans-Sylvania Epic is the official start of the spring/summer photography season, and pretty much requires me to pack up my entire studio and head for the hills of State College, PA. The tag line for the event is Singletrack Summer Camp, which is pretty accurate between stages – pool-time, hijinx in the woods, and a break from normal life, plus sneaking adult beverages. This year was a bit different, as it was shortened to five days of riding (vs. seven of years past), and we brought in some cutting-edge technology like Facebook Live to broadcast riders start stages and hit the trails. It was a friggin’ awesome time, and I didn’t even get to ride my bike all that much – I just would love to do this race from the rider’s perspective some day, too. Definite highlights:watching riders blast segments like Wildcat Gap, seeing the talent at Wheelie Wednesday, and of course, the Friday Night Rave. If you haven’t done this summer camp with a race in the middle, you really, REALLY should.
